Net WPM calculator

Gross WPM is raw speed. Net WPM subtracts your uncorrected errors. Most hiring tests report net, so that's the number to improve.
Gross WPM
50
Net WPM
49

Gross = (1,250 ÷ 5) ÷ 5 = 50.0. Net = gross − (4 ÷ 5) = 49.2.

The formulas

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Net WPM = gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed. A “word” is 5 characters, including spaces.

Worked example

1,250 characters in 5 minutes is 250 “words”, so gross is 50 WPM. With 4 uncorrected errors, net is 50 − 4/5 = 49.2, about 49 WPM. On a 1-minute test the same 4 errors would cost 4 WPM, so short tests punish errors harder.

Net vs gross on a job test

Employers usually care about net, because errors have to be fixed later. Some tests count an error per wrong word, others per wrong keystroke. Ask which, then practice on the job typing test, which scores net WPM automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between net WPM and gross WPM?

Gross WPM is your raw speed: characters typed divided by 5, per minute. Net WPM subtracts uncorrected errors per minute from gross, so it rewards accuracy. Hiring tests usually report net WPM.

How do you calculate net words per minute?

Divide characters typed by 5 to get words, divide by minutes for gross WPM, then subtract uncorrected errors divided by minutes. Example: 1,250 characters, 4 errors, 5 minutes gives 50 gross and about 49 net WPM.

Do corrected errors count against net WPM?

Usually no. Fixing an error removes it from the error count, though the time spent fixing it lowers your speed.
