About RiteType
RiteType is a free typing school in your browser. It's for kids learning the keyboard for the first time, students who need to type faster for school, and adults who never quite stopped looking at their hands.
Why we built it
Most of us learned to type by accident, hunting for keys with two fingers until it was fast enough. Touch typing is one of the few skills you use every day for decades, and it’s not hard to learn. It just needs short, regular practice with good feedback. Many typing sites bury that practice under sign-up walls, cluttered screens and pop-ups. We wanted something calmer: open the page, put your fingers on the home row, start.
How it works
- 100 short lessons in 20 levels take you from the home row to full sentences, adding a few keys at a time.
- An on-screen keyboard with finger guides shows which finger presses the next key, so your eyes can stay on the screen.
- Timed typing tests (1, 3 and 5 minutes) measure words per minute and accuracy, using the same standard most tests use: five characters count as one word.
- 29 typing games turn practice into play, from gentle letter games for young kids to racing and arcade games for older players.
Your progress is saved in your browser, so there’s no account needed. Read how to place your fingers if you’re starting from scratch, or jump straight into lesson one.
Who makes RiteType
RiteType is an independent project made in Los Angeles. It isn’t backed by a big ed-tech company, so feedback from learners, parents and teachers shapes what comes next. Teachers can set up free classes with join codes. See the teachers page.
How it stays free
RiteType is paid for by advertising. We keep ads away from the typing area so they don’t break your concentration, and we don’t place ad units on pages made for children. The privacy policy explains exactly how ads and cookies work here. An optional ad-free plan, RiteType Pro, is there for people who’d rather support the site directly.
