How to pass a typing test for a job
- 1
Find out exactly what's tested
Ask the recruiter: how many minutes, net or gross WPM, whether backspace works, and whether there's a 10-key or data-entry part.
- 2
Learn how errors cost you
On a net WPM test each uncorrected error takes one word per minute off your score, so a fast run with many errors can score lower than a steady, clean one.
- 3
Get a real baseline
Take a 3 or 5-minute test, not just a 1-minute sprint. Short tests flatter your speed.
- 4
Practice on work-style text
Hiring tests use sentences with capitals, numbers and punctuation. Practice on memos, emails and records, not random word lists.
- 5
Fix errors only right away
If you notice a slip in the word you're typing, fix it. Don't go back several words; it costs more time than it saves.
- 6
Train the number pad if it's tested
For data-entry roles, practice 10-key by touch with Enter, and know your KPH.
- 7
Build stamina
Five minutes is longer than it sounds. Do back-to-back 5-minute runs in the days before.
- 8
Set up on test day
Use a full-size keyboard if you can, sit tall, rest your fingers on the home row, and take one warm-up run before you start.
