RiteType

Privacy policy

Last updated

RiteType is built so you can practice typing without handing over personal details. There are no accounts, and your progress stays in your own browser. The main thing that involves outside companies is advertising, which keeps the site free. This page explains all of it in plain language.

Who runs RiteType

RiteType (ritetype.com) is based in Los Angeles, California. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean RiteType. You can reach us at hello@ritetype.com.

The short version

  • You don’t need an account, and we don’t ask for your name, email or age to use lessons, tests or games.
  • Your lesson stars, speeds, scores and settings are saved in your browser’s local storage, on your device. We never receive them.
  • We use Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners may use cookies to show and measure ads, including personalized ads where that’s allowed.
  • We never show targeted or personalized ads to children, or to signed-in student and school users. Public kids’ pages carry no ad units of ours, and any ad there is non-personalized and child-directed.
  • We use Google Analytics to see which pages are used, but never on kids’ pages or for signed-in students.
  • We don’t sell your personal information for money.

What’s saved on your device

RiteType remembers your progress with your browser’s local storage, which stays on your device. It holds:

  • Practice progress: completed lessons, stars, best words per minute and accuracy, test results and game high scores.
  • Settings: sound on or off, game difficulty, whether the finger helper is shown, which hand guide you’ve seen, and your Daily Challenge streak.
  • A one-time notice: if you dismiss the “grab a keyboard” message on a phone, we remember that for the current browser session only.

None of this is sent to us. Clearing your browser’s site data for ritetype.com erases it for good, and we can’t restore it for you. When you share a test result, the score is written into the link you share, so anyone with the link can see that score.

What our hosting provider sees

Like every website, our hosting provider receives basic technical information when your browser loads a page: your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. These server logs are used to keep the site running and secure, and they’re kept only for a limited time. We don’t use them to build profiles of visitors.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: which pages people visit, how they found us, and roughly what device and country they’re using. That tells us which lessons and games to improve. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (named _ga) to tell visits apart. It doesn’t tell us who you are.

  • We’ve turned off Google signals and ad-personalization signals, so this data isn’t used to personalize ads or linked to your Google account. Google Analytics 4 doesn’t log or store IP addresses.
  • No analytics on kids’ pages (the kids’ games, the kids’ typing test and Typing for kids), and none at all for signed-in students who joined with a class code. The analytics code isn’t loaded there.
  • Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland aren’t measured with analytics cookies unless they consent.
  • Analytics data is kept for 2 months, then deleted automatically by Google.
  • You can opt out with Google’s opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies.

We also look at aggregate search data in Google Search Console, such as which search terms lead to our pages. That isn’t tied to individual visitors.

Advertising and cookies

RiteType is free because it shows ads served by Google AdSense. Here’s how that works:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a visitor’s earlier visits to this website or to other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies lets Google and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to RiteType and other sites on the internet.
  • Other ad vendors and ad networks certified by Google may also serve ads on RiteType and use their own cookies or similar technologies.
  • Even non-personalized ads use cookies or similar technologies for things like limiting how often you see an ad, counting impressions and preventing fraud.

You have choices:

To learn more about what Google does with this data, read How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, you’ll see a consent message before any cookies are used for personalized ads, and you can change your choice at any time from the privacy link in that message.

Children and families

RiteType is a general-audience site with sections designed for kids: Typing for kids, kids’ games and the kids’ typing test. On those pages:

  • We don’t place ad units. If Google shows an ad there anyway, it’s requested as non-personalized and child-directed, so it’s never based on a child’s browsing history or a profile.
  • Nothing asks a child for personal information. There are no accounts, chat or uploads anywhere on the site.

RiteType never shows targeted or personalized ads to children. Signed-in students and school users see no ads at all. How we handle school data is set out in our student data privacy and sharing policy.

We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, in line with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If you’re a parent or guardian and think your child has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we’ll delete it.

How long we keep data

This is our written data retention policy, as required by the amended COPPA Rule (compliance required from April 22, 2026). We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it for, and then we delete it.

  • Progress and settings in your browser stay on your device until you clear them. We never hold a copy.
  • Server logs (IP address, browser, page, time) are used for security and troubleshooting and deleted within 90 days.
  • Analytics data in Google Analytics is kept for 2 months and then deleted automatically.
  • Emails you send us are kept while we deal with your message, and deleted within 12 months of the last reply unless the law requires us to keep them longer.
  • Requests from parents about a child’s information: we delete the information within 30 days, and keep only a short record that the request was handled.
  • School and student accounts: kept for as long as the school uses RiteType. Inactive student accounts are deleted after 12 months, and all school data is deleted within 30 days of a school’s request or the end of its agreement. See the student privacy policy.
  • Purchase records (plan, dates, amount, the email you paid with, and which RiteType account it belongs to) are kept while your plan is active and for up to 7 years afterwards for tax and accounting. Stripe keeps payment details under its own policy.
  • Advertising data is collected and kept by Google under Google’s own policies. We don’t receive data that identifies you.

We never keep children’s personal information indefinitely, and we don’t keep it in case it might be useful later.

If you buy a plan

Paid plans (RiteType Pro, Classroom Pro) are sold through Stripe, which handles the checkout page and your card. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe tells us your email, the plan, payment status and the RiteType account the purchase is linked to, so we can switch your plan on. We use this only to provide and support your plan and for our tax records. Children and student accounts can’t buy plans.

If you email us

If you write to us, we use your email address and message only to reply and to fix whatever you reported. We don’t add you to a mailing list. We delete the correspondence on the schedule in How long we keep data.

Visitors in Europe and the UK (GDPR)

For personalized advertising cookies, we rely on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time. For server logs and security, we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the site working and safe. You have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you, to object to or restrict its use, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Because we don’t run accounts, we usually hold nothing that identifies you. Ad data is held by Google, and Google’s own controls apply to it. Google may process data outside your country under its own safeguards.

California residents (CCPA / CPRA)

We don’t sell personal information for money. Advertising cookies can count as “sharing” personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. You can opt out by turning off personalized ads in Google’s Ad Settings, by blocking third-party cookies, or by emailing us. California residents can ask what personal information we have collected, and can ask us to delete or correct it. We won’t treat you differently for using these rights. The categories involved are internet activity on our site (pages viewed) and device identifiers such as IP address and cookie IDs, which go to our hosting provider and to Google (advertising and analytics) for the purposes above.

Security and changes

The site is served over HTTPS, and because we don’t run accounts, there’s very little personal data on our side to protect. If we change this policy, for example when we add accounts or a paid plan, we’ll post the new version here with a new “last updated” date. If a change is significant, we’ll also note it on the site.
