Why the conversion is only approximate

The formula converts a typing rate. Real data-entry KPH is usually measured on numbers or form fields, with pauses between records, and tests differ on whether Enter and Tab count. Measure it directly on the 10-key test or the alphanumeric test.

Real KPH requirements

Examples from public postings: North Carolina's Department of Revenue listed 10-key at 7,000 KPH (NCDOR); a Washington State posting listed 10,000 KPH 10-key by touch (posting); a Fidelity posting listed 8,000–10,000 KPH (posting).

Frequently asked questions

What does KPH mean in typing?

Keystrokes per hour: the number of keys pressed in an hour, usually counting only correct keystrokes. Data-entry and 10-key requirements are often stated in KPH.

How do you convert WPM to KPH?

Multiply WPM by 300. A typing "word" is 5 keystrokes and an hour is 60 minutes, so 40 WPM is about 12,000 KPH. Divide KPH by 300 to go back.

What is 50 WPM in KPH?

About 15,000 keystrokes per hour (50 × 300). Real measured 10-key KPH can differ, because number entry has pauses between entries.
