Pre-employment typing test practice

Many employers send an online typing test as part of the application. Formats differ by testing platform, but most measure the same things: speed, accuracy and sometimes data entry.

Please note that the quarterly planning meeting has moved from Tuesday to Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Conference Room B. Bring a printed copy of your department budget and a short list of goals for the next three months. If you cannot attend, send a summary to the office manager by Wednesday afternoon so it can be shared with the group. Parking in the north lot will be limited that morning because of resurfacing work, so plan a few extra minutes for your arrival. Lunch will be provided after the meeting, and any dietary needs should be sent to the front desk by Monday.

Start typing to begin the clock. Pasting is turned off, just like on a real hiring test.

What most hiring typing tests measure

Words per minute (often net), accuracy, and for some roles keystrokes per hour on numbers or forms. Tests may be one to several minutes long, and may or may not allow backspace. Ask the recruiter how long the test is, whether it's scored in net or gross WPM, whether backspace works, and whether there's a 10-key or data-entry part.

About testing platforms

Employers use many assessment providers, and job sites sometimes have their own skills tests. RiteType isn't affiliated with any of them and doesn't copy their tests. Our practice builds the skills those tests measure: timed copy typing, net WPM, 10-key and alphanumeric entry.

A one-week prep

Get a 5-minute baseline, practice the job-specific passages, add the 10-key and form drill if data entry is involved, and follow the 7-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pre-employment typing test?

An online test employers use to check typing speed and accuracy before hiring. It's usually timed and scored in words per minute and accuracy, and some include data-entry or 10-key sections.

Is RiteType the same test employers use?

No. RiteType isn't affiliated with any testing company or job site. It's independent practice that builds the skills these tests measure.

Can I retake a pre-employment typing test?

That depends on the employer and platform. Ask before you start, and practice here first so your first attempt counts.
