A friendly first typing test
This test is made for young typists. It runs for one minute, uses short, easy words, and shows the keyboard with hands so your child can see which finger to use for every letter. There are no ads on this page, and no account or email is needed. Scores are saved only in your browser.
Before starting, help your child put their fingers on the home row: left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ;, thumbs on the space bar. The bumps on F and J help fingers find home without looking.
What's a normal speed for my child?
Kids type more slowly than adults, and that's completely normal. Speed grows with age, hand size and practice, and younger children are often still learning where the letters are. Celebrate accuracy and good finger habits first. Speed follows. Our parent's guide to typing for kids covers what age to start, how long to practice, and what to expect by grade.
Make practice fun
Short, regular practice works best for kids: 10 to 15 minutes a few times a week. Mix the lessons with games made for little typists like Key Hop and Bubble Pop, or browse all the typing games for kids. A printable finger chart on the desk helps too.
